Keynote: Fundamentals of Diversity and Inclusion

September 18, 2018 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm EDT

September 18, 2018 @ 11 am – 12:30 pm EDT

DESCRIPTION

In this interactive keynote of the 2018 OneOp Virtual Conference, Dr. Phibbs kicks the conference off with an overview of diversity and inclusion, and lays the foundation for our discussions throughout the week. She addresses issues such as privilege, power, and oppression, and challenges us to think about how we may at times contribute to and at other times challenge the damaging effects of these issues. Dr. Phibbs inspires us with strategies for doing the work of diversity and inclusion as culturally competent professionals supporting the diverse clients and families we serve.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain what diversity means and why it is important in both our public and personal lives.
  • Understand the terms prejudice, discrimination and bigotry.
  • Outline how power, privilege and oppression are central to the understanding of diversity.
  • Be able to explain the difference between equality and equity and consider how these terms relate to issues of diversity.
