Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Youth Programs: Developing Inclusive Program Structures

About This Webinar:

Youth programs that are welcoming and safe are built on a program structure aimed at protecting and empowering all young people. Learn how your youth program structure can impact diversity, equity, and inclusion and strategies for adapting your program structure to make it more inclusive.

This webinar is first in a series.  The second webinar,  Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Youth Programs: Fostering Supportive Adult – Youth Relationships  is on August 24, 2021.

Learning Objectives

Participants will:

    • Be introduced to the Youth Inclusion Implementation Guide (YIIG) and Module
    • Be introduced to the model for adult learning within the YIIG (i.e. reflective practice)
    • Learn how program structure impacts Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) 
    • Learn strategies to adapt program structure to increase DEI

Presenters

Mark Otto and Adeya Richmond work in the REACH Center a part of Extension at the University of Minnesota. The REACH Center utilizes a multi-disciplinary approach integrating both Research and Outreach to support those who work with and on behalf of children, youth, and families. Through a three-fold approach, the REACH Center provides empirical research that identifies and addresses key issues impacting children, youth, and families and the programs that serve them, and offer outreach and professional development through online resources.

Adeya Richmond, PhD, LP, works as the lead research scientist in the REACH Center. Aside from working on projects that focus on youth development and families, her primary research interests include cross-cultural diversity in parenting, racial identity, and youth’s prosocial behaviors. Her secondary research interests are mental and behavioral health disparities across diverse cultural and socioeconomic groups.

Mark Otto serves as the projects director for outreach in the REACH Center. image for Event page He provides planning and implementation for both research and outreach and oversees the work of the technology staff. Mark has a BS from Mankato State University and a masters of public affairs from the Humphrey Institute at the University of Minnesota. He has more than 20 years’ experience working with family, child, and youth programs.

  • Certified Family Life Educators (CFLEs): This webinar will offer 1.5 Contact Hours from the National Council on Family Relations to CFLE’s.
  • Certificates of completion will also be available for providers interested in documenting their training activities.
