This is a free professional development webinar presented by OneOp Family Transitions.

BEFORE THE WEBINAR, please complete these two steps:

Few transitions impact families more than when a service member returns home with a physical or psychological wound. This webinar will provide tools and resources to help Veteran parents living with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) talk about their feelings and experiences with their children.

  • Understand the impact of parental PTSD on youth
  • Increase awareness of resources for veteran parents and their children regarding parental PTSD
  • Reflect upon ways in which providers can support veterans in their role as parents

Michelle D. Sherman, Ph.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist who has dedicated her career to supporting families affected by mental illness, deployment and PTSD/trauma. While working in the VA healthcare system for 17 years, she developed family education programs that were recognized as national best practices and are being implemented at VAs across the country. She now works at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in the REACH Program, doing research on military families.

Dr. Sherman graduated from the University of Notre Dame and later earned her doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the University of Missouri at Columbia. Dr. Sherman has worked extensively with families dealing with a range of traumatic experiences, including military combat, domestic violence, and sexual assault. She co-chaired the American Psychological Association’s (APA) Presidential Task Force on Military Deployment Services for Youth, Families and Service Members, and is a Fellow of the APA Division 43 (Society of Family Psychology).

In her personal life, she writes books for teens affected by parental trauma/mental illness, including Finding My Way: A Teen’s Guide to Living with a Parent Who Has Experienced Trauma.
