This 90-minute webinar will focus on providing financial practitioners with tools and resources to aid clients in selecting student loans. The webinar speakers will discuss research findings related to student loan research and student loan/financial aid education best practices and experience.


Dr. Barbara O’Neill, financial resource management specialist for Rutgers Cooperative Extension, has been a professor, financial educator, and author for 35 years. She has written over 1,500 consumer newspaper articles and over 125 articles for academic journals, conference proceedings, and other professional publications. She is a certified financial planner (CFP®), chartered retirement planning counselor (CRPC®), accredited financial counselor (AFC), certified housing counselor (CHC), and certified financial educator (CFEd). Dr. O’Neill served as president of the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education and is the author of two trade books, Saving on a Shoestring and Investing on a Shoestring, and co-author of Investing For Your Future, Money Talk: A Financial Guide for Women, and Small Steps to Health and Wealth. She earned a Ph.D. in family financial management from Virginia Tech and received over three dozen awards for professional achievements and over $900,000 in funding for financial education programs and research.

Dr. Carrie Johnson draws upon her vast experiences as a veteran financial educator and mother of four to provide engaging family resource management programming for households of all shapes and sizes. She earned a B.S. from Dakota State University in English, M.S. from South Dakota State University in Family Financial Planning, and Ph.D. from Iowa State University in Family and Consumer Science Education. She has worked as a financial aid counselor at South Dakota State University from 2003-2008 and then in 2009 started working for SDSU Extension as an FCS County Educator, Field Specialist, and is now the State Family Resource Management Specialist. As an FRM Specialist, Dr. Johnson draws upon her experiences as a veteran financial educator to provide engaging programming for households of all shapes and sizes.

Elizabeth Coogan, Senior Advisor, Customer Service Experience, Federal Student Aid, U.S. Department of Education. Her role is to develop key strategies to help students and families make well-informed financial decisions regarding higher education. Elizabeth is a member of the U.S. Department of Treasury’s Financial Literacy and Education Commission which is comprised of 22 government agencies tasked to develop a national strategy on financial education. Prior to joining FSA, Elizabeth was an administrator for over 25 years in the financial services industry. Elizabeth owned and operated a small business that provided enrichment education programs for young people and spent 7 years in the classroom teaching Personal Finance to students at Nassau Community College in Garden City, NY. Elizabeth regularly speaks to community groups where she shares her knowledge and enthusiasm for how good personal financial habits can provide a solid foundation to build a lifetime of financial well-being.
