Description

Drawing from case studies and audience participation, in this session, Dr. Phibbs challenges us to consider the roles of our personal values and assumptions as we engage in the work of cultural competency. We build the community and capacity necessary to advance social justice and equity as we engage in self-reflection and authentic dialogue. This session provides us the time and space required to begin practicing critical aspects of our cultural competency journey and offers concrete strategies for furthering the important work of cultural awareness and compassion.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify one’s experiences with having authentic conversations in general
  • Identify one’s experiences having authentic conversations about diversity and inclusion
  • Understand common challenges for engaging in authentic conversations about diversity and inclusion
  • Recognize strategies for effectively engaging in authentic conversations about diversity and inclusion
  • Practice engaging in authentic conversations about diversity and inclusion

PRESENTER

Anne Phibbs, Ph.D. is the Founder and President of Strategic Diversity Initiatives and brings over 25 years experience helping organizations advance their equity, diversity, and inclusion goals.  Anne has extensive experience in training, teaching, curriculum development, and training of trainers, and has delivered workshops and classes to participants in corporate, government, higher education, nonprofit, healthcare, and faith community settings.  Anne served as GLBT Student Services Director at Metropolitan State University, and at the University of Minnesota, she served as Director of the GLBTA Programs Office and Director of Education in the Office for Equity and Diversity. Anne built a successful diversity and inclusion leadership program at the University of Minnesota, with a focus on emotional intelligence (EI), and she is an EI Practitioner certified in the EQ-i2.0 and EQ360 methods.  Anne earned her Ph.D. in Philosophy and Feminist Studies from the University of Minnesota and lives in Minneapolis.

Continuing Education Offerings

This session is approved for 1.5 continuing education (CE) credits from the UT Austin Steve Hicks School of Social Work for credentialed and licensed professionals.

This program has been submitted to The Commission for Case Manager Certification for approval to provide board-certified case managers with 1.5 clock hours.

1.5 CPEU will be available for Registered Dietitians for this session.
