About This Webinar:

In a perfect world of military and veteran family support, the Department of Defense, VA, military services, and local community agencies will work together to connect military and veteran families to the right supports, meeting their imminent needs and gaining trust for future intervention.

One way organizations and communities can do so is by creating battle plans that guide organizational responses to rapidly-changing situations, such as military deployments.

This webinar is presented by the DoD’s former family readiness policy director and a doctoral student from the Military Family Research Institute at Purdue University. Drawing on a chapter they wrote for A Battle Plan for Supporting Military Families: Lessons For the Leaders of Tomorrow, the two share evidence-informed insights about how community members and organizations can prepare to support families before, during and after such events.

Barbara Thompson

Office of the Deputy Assistant, Military Community and Family Policy

Ms. Thompson assumed the duties of director for the Office of Military Family Readiness Policy, Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Military Community and Family Policy in 2006 and retired in 2017. She was responsible for programs and policies that promote military families’ well-being, readiness and quality of life. In this capacity, she had oversight for Department of Defense child development and youth programs, serving 700,000 children daily at more than 300 locations worldwide. Ms. Thompson had purview over military family readiness program, including spouse career advancement, military family lifecycle and transition support, community capacity building supporting geographically dispersed military members and their families, the Family Advocacy Program, and Exceptional Family Member Program. She also coordinated support programs for the severely injured and supported the rebuilding of the Ministry of Education in Iraq.

Ms. Bailey is a graduate research assistant at the Military Family Research Institute and student in the human development and family studies doctoral program. Her current research focuses how family context like parental military service may influence youth development through mechanisms like instrumental and emotional caregiving behaviors. In addition to her research and work with MFRI, she is interested in translational research practices, evidenced in her work with the Purdue’s Center for Families annual Family Impact Seminars. She was CFF’s 2107 recipient of the Levien Family Policy Scholarship and the graduate representative for the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities Honor Pledge Task Force. Upon completion of her doctoral degree, Ms. Bailey plans to pursue a career using research to inform public policy for military families and military connected communities.
