Learn about the Spectrum of Prevention as a public health framework to understand systemic drivers of hunger\, poor nutrition\, and chronic disease and explore the nuanced ways these challenges show up in military families. Through thought-provoking conversations\, participants will brainstorm a range of solutions while a graphic artist produces a visual representation of the dialogue in real-time. \n \nFood Security in Focus\nTake advantage of OneOp’s Food Security in Focus collection\, offering live and on-demand programming related to food security.  \n  \nFood Security in Focus \n  \nPresenters\n \nNoelle Harden hails from Moorhead\, Minnesota\, where she has worked as a Health and Nutrition Educator for the last ten years. Noelle is a creative thinker and has used a range of strategies to address nutrition security in her work and personal life. At the University of Minnesota Extension\, she supports communities and organizations in advancing food justice and health equity through public participation. \n \nSherrill Knezel is a graphic recorder\, illustrator\, art educator\, and founder of Meaningful Marks LLC\, based in the Milwaukee\, WI area where she uses visuals and graphic recording to uplift\, and amplify the work of nonprofits\, educators\, and corporate sector clients having conversations and creating generative and transformative change in their communities. She leads visual literacy workshops to empower people to use visuals to increase connection\, clarity\, and collaboration and is the author of Heart Speak: A Visual Interpretation of Let Your Life Speak\,  \nSherrill created two graphic recordings for this webinar. The first captures the content and conversation around military families experiencing food security\, the connections between national security and nutrition security\, and how to take a systems approach to nutrition security. \n \nThe second graphic recording captures the ideas and examples that were shared by participants in each of the six areas in the Spectrum of Prevention. \n  \n \nUsing the graphics above and participants’ ideas for preventing nutrition insecurity\, we created a Conversation Harvest document (PDF) you can use for ideas and inspiration in addressing nutrition security. You can download it using the link below. \nContinuing Education (CE) Credit\nContinuing Education \nThis webinar is being submitted for the following continuing education (CE) credits: \n\nCertified Family Life Educators (CFLE):  This program has been approved by the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) for 1.5 CE credits for CFLEs. Among these are helping to connect service members and families to needed resources and supports at the community\, state\, and national level. In addition\, family readiness requires an understanding of the underlying economic\, social\, and environmental factors that influence health status and outcomes. These factors may interact and have a compound effect. For example\, a family facing health care costs may have to cut back on spending for necessary needs such as food and shelter. The inability to afford or access nutritious foods may contribute to chronic health conditions. Programs and services can help to address various threats to health and well-being. Medicaid is one such program. It is a joint federal-state program that has been providing healthcare access and coverage for millions of Americans\, including military families\, since 1965. Join this webinar to explore the connection between Medicaid\, food security\, and the well-being of your clients. \n \nLearning Objectives:  \n\nDiscuss social determinants of health paradigm. This model or paradigm\, which accounts for the influence of underlying social\, economic\, environmental factors on health status and outcomes has been utilized by numerous authorities and experts\, including the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.\nIdentify how Medicaid coverage can help to off-set the economic burden of health costs thus improving the economic status of families who can then better afford essential needs\, such as food.\nExamine barriers and obstacles to accessing Medicaid and other programs due to factors associated with the social determinants of health.\nDetermine various Medicaid services and initiatives focused on nutrition and food security.\nReview possible future steps and developments in Medicaid’s role in food security and in addressing the social determinants of health.\n\nFood Security in Focus\nTake advantage of OneOp’s Food Security in Focus collection\, offering live and on-demand programming related to food security.  \n  \nFood Security in Focus \n  \nPresenter\nChristopher Plein\, Ph.D.\nProfessor of Public Administration\nEberly Family Professor for Outstanding Public Service\nWest Virginia University \nChristopher Plein\, Ph.D. is a Professor of Public Administration and Eberly Family Professor for Outstanding Public Service at West Virginia University. His academic research on health and social policy has been published in such journals as Health Affairs\, the Journal of Health and Human Services Administration\, and The Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Uninsured. His expertise on Medicaid and health policy has led to invited presentations at the state and national level\, presentations to the West Virginia Legislature\, and interviews with state and national media. Dr. Plein is also part of OneOp and works on issues related to military caregiving and individuals with special needs. \nContinuing Education (CE) Credit\nContinuing Education \n\nBoard Certified Patient Advocates: This program has been approved by The Patient Advocate Certification Board to provide continuing education credit to Board Certified Patient Advocates (BCPA).
