About this Podcast

This 30-minute podcast will explore health disparities, examine key factors involved in perpetuating disparities, and examine what each of us can do as individuals, policy makers and providers to help improve health equity.  Listeners will learn how to:

  • Define the concepts of health disparity and health equity.
  • Discuss societal trends, concepts, and challenges related to health disparities.
  • Implement simple strategies for promoting health equity.

Each month host Alicia Cassels introduces individuals who excel in challenging professional fields and interviews experts in medical, social and management sciences to explore what keeps professionals engaged and thriving at work.

Barbara L. Kornblau, JD, OTR/L, FAOTA

Barbara Kornlaud is an attorney, an occupational therapist, a certified case manager, a radical e-patient, and a person with a disability. She is a Professor of Occupational Therapy at Florida A&M University, where she teaches by distance.  Currently, she collaborates with the National Fibromyalgia and Chronic Pain Association under a PCORI grant to organize a grassroots, pain patient, research community. She also collaborates with the American Association on Health and Disabilities, under a Komen Foundation grant, to promote accessibility of mammography screenings for women with disabilities.

Ms. Kornblau is a former Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellow for Senators Harkin and Rockefeller. After her fellowship, she organized stakeholders in a successful effort to include people with disabilities in the Affordable Care and its implementing regulations. She founded the Coalition for Disability Health Equity to further this work. She collaborates with national civil rights , health and health equity, and disability advocacy coalitions.  Kornblau is a Past President of the American Occupational Therapy Association. As an attorney, she has litigated cases under the Americans with Disabilities Act involving discrimination in employment, state and local government services, and health care services. Ms. Kornblau has presented nationally and internationally, and is widely published.

Christopher Plein, Ph.D.

Christopher Plein, Ph. D. is an Eberly Professor of Outstanding Public Service at West Virginia University. He served as chair of the Department of Public Administration from 2004 until 2011 and also served as an Assistant and Associate Dean for West Virginia University’s Eberly College of Arts & Sciences 2005-2013.

Christopher Plein’s area of speciality is public policy formation and implementation. Recently, his research has concentrated on the study of social programs, with a special emphasis on the effects of welfare reform and state health policy. Professor Plein’s research has reached national audiences through numerous publications and presentations. Dr. Plein also studies public administration and policy in West Virginia. He is co-author of the recently published book, West Virginia Politics and Government (University of Nebraska Press, 2008).

Dr. Plein has been active in university outreach and engagement in West Virginia. In 2004, he was appointed by Governor Wise to serve on the board of directors for the newly established AccessWV state health insurance program which provides health coverage to those with high-risk health conditions. He continues to serve in this role and also provides service to various government committees dealing with the problems of the medically uninsured in the state.

Christopher Plein has also been actively engaged in community development efforts in rural West Virginia. He is a founding member of the West Virginia Community Design Team which organizes teams of volunteers that visit and assist rural communities in identifying community development needs and opportunities. Since 1997, this program has made over 30 visits to communities in the state. Dr. Plein has been a member of a team member on a number of these visits and serves on the program’s steering committee. In 2006, Dr Plein’s outreach contributions were recognized by West Virginia University when he was named an Eberly Professor of Outstanding Public Service.

Alicia Cassels, M.A. – OneOp (MFLN) Program Development and Evaluation Specialist, Auburn University

Alicia has 25 years of experience working with professionals, young people and families in university and behavioral healthcare settings. Her current Cooperative Extension work is informed by 15 years of previous service as a clinical therapist and program director, gaining valuable knowledge of the challenges and opportunities faced by families and service providers in underserved and rural communities. For the past 10 years, Alicia has focused on the delivery of research and evidence-based Cooperative Extension programs, providing training, program development and educational resources for professionals, young people, and families with an emphasis on special needs, rural, military and under-served populations. Alicia has secured and managed more than 8 million dollars in competitive grant awards to fund Cooperative Extension initiatives.
