Every October, National 4-H Week brings attention to the positive impact 4-H has on youth, families, and communities across the nation. Rooted in leadership, service, and hands-on learning, 4-H equips young people with the skills they need to thrive. For military families, this mission carries an even deeper meaning.
The 4-H Military Partnership, a collaboration between the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA–NIFA), and the nation’s land-grant universities, ensures that military-connected youth have access to the same high-quality 4-H experiences as their peers. Whether they live on base, off base, or move frequently due PCS-ing (Permanent Change in Station), 4-H provides continuity, stability, and a sense of belonging.
Connecting Youth Across Communities
Extension military liaisons serve as the bridge between military installations and local 4-H programs. They help families navigate both military and civilian resources so their children can continue participating in 4-H regardless of where they live.
For example, in Texas, this dual access allows military families who may not live on an installation to join local 4-H clubs through county Extension offices while also taking part in installation-based opportunities. This seamless connection ensures that 4-H remains a constant source of community and growth no matter where military families are stationed.
Building Resilience and Leadership
The 4-H Military Partnership goes beyond traditional club activities by promoting leadership development, social-emotional learning, and family engagement. By involving both youth and parents, these programs strengthen family connections and create opportunities for shared success.
Through leadership workshops, STEM projects, and community service, military youth gain confidence and discover their ability to lead with purpose. These experiences not only prepare them for future success but also reinforce the 4-H pledge, where 4-Hers commit to the betterment of their club, community, country, and world.
A Call to Celebrate and Connect
Although National 4-H Week has passed, we’re proud to honor the partnerships that make these opportunities possible throughout the rest of October and all year long. The collaboration between 4-H, the military, and land-grant universities reflects shared values of leadership, service, and resilience—empowering youth in every community.
Families are encouraged to reach out to their local county Extension office or connect with their Extension 4-H Military Liaison to learn more about upcoming programs and events. With support from the 4-H Foundation and community partners, these initiatives continue to grow, ensuring that military youth have every opportunity to thrive in your state and beyond.
