On October 30, 2025, I had the honor of co-hosting the webinar “Unlocking Global Talent: Supporting Foreign-Born & OCONUS Military Spouse Employment.” Service providers, career counselors, and nonprofit leaders came together to explore how we can close employment gaps for foreign-born spouses living in the U.S. (CONUS) and for spouses stationed overseas (OCONUS). Let’s review what was learned.

Not All Barriers Are the Same

  • Foreign-Born CONUS Spouses: Often face U.S. credential-recognition challenges, limited professional networks, and cultural misalignment—even when they bring strong qualifications and experience.
  • OCONUS Spouses: Experience host-nation visa restrictions, unfamiliar licensing requirements, and language barriers that limit employment options.

Locally Grounded, Globally Aware Solutions

  • Launch Credential-Translation Programs: Partner with local colleges, licensing boards, and professional associations to help spouses verify and use their international credentials.
  • Engage Host-Nation Employers: Build recruitment pipelines, co-host overseas job fairs, and educate employers about the value military spouses bring.
  • Develop Employer Toolkits: Create brief, easy-to-share resources showcasing spouse skills, security clearances, and the retention benefits of hiring military spouses.
  • Offer Bilingual Coaching: Provide résumé workshops, interview preparation, and career counseling in spouses’ native languages.

Community Partnerships Are Key

Highlighted resources included:

  • Military OneSource (MySECO Portal): Education guidance and career counseling for military spouses.
  • Local Chambers of Commerce: In both U.S. and overseas locations to support direct employer connections.
  • Peer Networks such as Foreign-Born Military Spouse Network (FMSN): Offering mentorship, cultural insight, and ongoing support for thousands of foreign-born military spouses.

Next Steps

Supporting foreign-born and OCONUS spouses isn’t just a matter of fairness—it strengthens family readiness, economic stability, and mission success. I invite you to stay connected and take part in these efforts. Together, we can unlock the global talent of foreign-born military spouses and empower them to build meaningful, sustainable careers.
