Description

Dr. McGuire’s engaging session begins with an insightful overview of sexual orientation, sexual expression, gender fluidity, and gender roles. This conversation provides context for working with and advocating for families with diverse structures, sexualities, and genders. She explores diverse families and family members within the context of the military experience, including current and historical policy norms, and also explores the Family Gender Environment tool to support providers working with families.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explore ways to work with and advocate for families with diverse structures, sexualities, and genders.
  • Explain how to create a safe, respectful, understanding, and compassionate space required for the fluidity of military families.
  • Share an overview of sexual orientation, sexual expression, gender fluidity, and gender roles.
  • Explain how the Family Gender Environment tool can be used to support providers working with diverse families.
  • Discuss diverse families and family members within the context of the military experience, including current and historical policy norms.

PRESENTER

Jenifer McGuire, PhD, MPH, is an Associate Professor of Family Social Science at the University of Minnesota. She received her PhD in Family Studies and Human Development and her MPH in Public Health at the University of Arizona.  Her research focuses on transgender youth and families as well as parenting and sexual health. Within each area, Dr. McGuire works on several ongoing projects that utilize different types of data while collaborating with clinics, schools, and community groups. Her goal is to examine elements of adolescent gender reassignment and provide safe and appropriate transition services. Dr. McGuire is a member of a developing coalition with the goal of enhancing wellbeing for sexual and gender minority youth in Minnesota and beyond. She has received many awards including the 2010 Hugo G. Beigal Award, 2010 Society for Research on Adolescence Social Policy Publication Award, and the 2009 Leadership Fellows Award.
