Pt. 2 Vlog Series: Centers for Independent Living – Transitioning to Adulthood.

Centers for Independent Living (CILs) are community-based centers that are run by and for people with disabilities and offer a broad range of services to empower and enable people to stay in the community (ACL, 2020).

Watch and listen as video blog (vlog) host, Lakshmi Mahadevan, Ph.D., Extension Program Specialist for Special Populations at Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, speaks with Pat Morse, LMSW, Program Manager for the Brazos Valley Center for Independent Living (BVCIL) about the importance of Centers for Independent Living (CIL) and highlights specific topics and resources for parents and caregivers.

In part two of the nine-part vlog series, Ms. Morse provides tips and strategies for parents and caregivers as they prepare their child for independent living. Ms. Morse reiterates the importance of the ‘independent living philosophy,’ from part one: Overview of Centers for Independent Living and when it should begin. You will also learn about the age of when transition planning begins, state education agency vs. federal requirements, and how advocating for your child is crucial during the transition process.

Stay tuned next month as the OneOp Military Caregiving concentration area shares part three of the vlog series where our host and guest speaker discuss aging and disability networks for all ages of individuals with disabilities.
