Retirement Benefit Basics: The DoD Survivor Benefit Plan

About This Webinar:

Planning ahead for the care of loved ones in the event of death can be a daunting task for retiring service members and their families, but it is important to understand available benefits in order to make informed decisions. Be prepared to educate your clients by furthering your understanding of the DoD Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) and the Reserve Component SBP (RCSBP). Join this webinar to:

  1. Understand the SBP and the RCSBP and how they are calculated.
  2. Understand the basic differences between SBP and term life insurance.
  3. Determine the effects on SBP when someone selects the Lump Sum option in the Blended Retirement System (BRS).
  4. Determine the impact of the Uniformed Services Former Spouse Protection Act on SBP/RCSBP and the division of retired pay.

Photo of Patricia CruzPatricia (Patty) Cruz enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve while in graduate school in 2003 as an operating room technician and later commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve as a Physical Therapist. While she has served in a variety of capacities throughout her career, Ms. Cruz is currently the Army Survivor Benefit Plan Program Manager. Ms. Cruz is responsible for the Army Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) Policy and serves as the Army representative on SBP matters for the Department of Defense. She trains and advises Retirement Services Officers for the Regular Army, Army National Guard and Army Reserve. 

Photo of Mark OverbergMark Overberg retired from the U.S. Army in 2007.  In 2010, he became the Deputy Director, Army Retirement Services within the Army’s Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, G-1. In 2016, Overberg was promoted to Director. Working out of Arlington, VA, Overberg is responsible for all Army retirement services policy and oversight of the program’s delivery to Soldiers of all three components plus 1.25 million Retired Soldiers and surviving spouses and strategic level program communications.

  • Case Manager: This program has been submitted to the Commission for Case Manager Certification for approval to provide board certified case managers with 1.5 clock hours.
  • Board Certified Patient Advocates: This program has been pre-approved by The Patient Advocate Certification Board to provide continuing education credit to Board Certified Patient Advocates (BCPA). The course has been approved for a total of 1.5 CE contact hour, of which 0.0 are in the area of Ethics.
