How do we better understand child sexual abuse and what are ways in which we can prevent it from happening before it starts? Answering this question has been one of the main goals of OneOp’s Sexual Behavior in Children and Youth Series. To understand, not just the laws and consequences of problematic childhood sexual behavior and sexual abuse, but ways to develop strategies that clinicians, parents, and helping professionals can use when working with children and teens.
To add more to the conversations within OneOp’s Sexual Behavior in Children and Youth Series, we wanted to share a great organization and resource that we learned about in the process of organizing this series: The Moore Center for the Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse.
Dr. Elizabeth Letourneau, who recently presented in our “From Hysteria to Hope: Bringing Reason to Sexual Abuse in Childhood” webinar, is the Director of the Moore Center for the Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHSPH). The Moore Center’s mission is to educate and conduct research to highlight child sexual abuse as a preventable public health problem. The Moore Center shares their ongoing research projects on their website, as well as resources from other fantastic organizations that they collaborate with.
Understanding how to prevent child sexual abuse before an incident happens is more effective than doing something about it after the fact. For more on issues of child sexual abuse and problematic sexual behavior, please visit our Sexual Behavior in Children and Youth Series homepage to get access to all of the programming in this fantastic and informative series. More webinars, podcasts, and resources are on schedule throughout 2020, so stay tuned!
