On June 10, 2020, OneOp hosted the latest webinar in our ongoing Sexual Behavior in Children & Youth Series.
In “Supporting Youth to Set Healthy Boundaries with Technology,” we were joined by Jasmine Uribe, Chief Operating Officer for Break the Cycle, a great organization that inspires and supports young people 12 – 24 to build healthy relationships and create a culture without abuse.
Webinar Highlights
Looking back at this fantastic webinar, we wanted to share some of the highlights that stood out from this session on addressing the impact of technology on youth. These include how to set healthy boundaries to help safeguard against cyber abuse and dating abuse and to share resources that are beneficial for service providers working with children and families.
- Jasmine began the presentation by highlighting the importance of teaching youth about personal boundaries and consent. This foundational lesson on informed consent and safety is to prevent problematic sexual behavior by promoting healthy and safe technology use.
- She shared some sobering facts on youth dating and sexual abuse as a public health crisis. Primarily, 1 in 3 high school students and 1 in 5 middle school students are affected by dating abuse.
- Jasmine defined relationship violence and shared some common warning signs to look out for. She also discussed the various forms that abuse can take, such as verbal/emotional, physical, sexual, financial, stalking, and digital abuse.
- She spoke on the mission of Break the Cycle and the work they implement within their community response by meeting youth and teens where they are. This includes allowing youth to teach adults about the latest lingo and the newest social media platforms that youth and teens are using and connecting over.
- eTag, or End Tech Abuse Across Generations, is a project of Break the Cycle that aims to provide technical assistance, resources, and support to address the use and misuse of technology in sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking youth may experience.
- The online training that eTag provides includes guides for resources on cyber safety plans, digital evidence collection guides, and legal info on the non-consensual sharing of intimate images.
