Eddy Mentzer of the Spouse Employment and Career Opportunities program of the Department of Defense’s Family Readiness Policy will start this webinar by discussing the resources and tools this program has in place to support military spouses. He will cover the benefits and the pitfalls of working as a freelancer or contractor, and the “gig economy.” He will also discuss new partnerships SECO has developed to further support military spouses.
Janel Cloutier, Program Analyst and Military Spouse Program Representative, Office of Veterans Business Development, Veteran Business Outreach Center of the U.S. Small Business Administration, will then explain the programs the SBA has to support military spouses, as well as instruction on how to navigate those programs.
Both presenters will share success stories of entrepreneurial military spouses. Webinar attendees working with military service members will leave the webinar knowing where to find resources, partnering organizations, and support when working with military spouses seeking educational or career opportunities.

Eddy Mentzer, Associate Director for Military Family Readiness & Well-Being, in the Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Military Community & Family Policy. Mr. Mentzer’s duties include policy oversight and support to Military Service delivered Family Readiness and Support Programs and the DoD’s Spouse Education and Career Opportunities (SECO) Program.
In this role, Eddy brings the unique blend and perspective of not only a 27 year Federal Career managing military family support programs but also that of a military spouse and as the parent of a military child.
Eddy leads a team focused on easing the impact of challenges faced by military families including relocation, transition, financial readiness and spouse employment that result from the mobile military lifestyle. These endeavors include management of the Military One Source Spouse Career Counseling Center, My Career Advancement Account Scholarship (MyCAA), the Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP) and a myriad of other initiatives focused on the well-being of Service members and their families.
