Dis/ability, Race, and Equity

In this session, Dr. Beneke encourages us to reflect on our identities so that we may recognize ourselves, our behaviors, and our professional practices within critical conversations of dis/ability, race, and equity. As we unpack our identities within these contexts, we increase our capacity to address bias and exclusion, recognize diverse family perspectives, and fine-tune our roles as practitioners. Dr. Beneke shares an anti-bias framework for working with families that serves as an integral tool for understanding ourselves and advocating for others.

Learning Objectives:

• Define institutional ableism, racism, and their intersections
• Examine how ableism and racism are enacted through everyday interactions to create inequitable consequences for families
• Explore the benefits of an anti-bias framework for advancing equity in their work with families
• Apply an anti-bias framework for working with families to their own professional practice

PRESENTER

Dr. Maggie Beneke is an assistant professor at the University of Washington. Her research focuses on re-thinking inclusive, equitable education for children and families from historically marginalized backgrounds. Her scholarly work is premised on a view of inclusive education as a social movement in response to the exclusion of children viewed as different (e.g., children with disabilities, children of color) in comparison to an (often) unspoken status quo (e.g., able-bodied, White). Through critical analysis of the local processes and consequences of identity construction (e.g., ability, race, gender), she aims to highlight and support early childhood practitioners’ inclusive practices, as well as identify and transform deficit discourses surrounding young children’s identities and competencies.
