Handle with Care: Helping Children Cope with Parental Loss| Anchored. Episode 13

Grief, or the reaction to the loss of a loved one, is universal. We all experience grief. But does the experience differ in children and adolescents? Estimates suggest that 5% of children 15 or younger have lost one or both parents (Steen, 1998). Several interventions exist to assist these children with their grief, including bereavement camps. In this episode, Dr. Irene McClatchey discusses the effects of grief on children and how to effectively intervene in order to help them process the loss of a parent through illness, injury, or death. 

Guest Bio
Irene McClatchey, PhD is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker currently serving as an Associate Professor and Director of the MSW program at Kennesaw State University. After an extensive sojourn in hospice, Irene developed children’s bereavement groups and grief camps and designed new treatment tools for work with children experiencing grief. Irene left the clinical arena in 2003 to further her knowledge about children and grief through studies and research.
