Supporting Military Teens: Community Healthy Living and Food Security Programs

December 7, 2023 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm EST

About This Webinar

Community support and education can have a great impact on bolstering food security. Our access to and relationship with food connects to our overall health, wellness, and lived experiences. Engaging military teens through programs focusing on food access, nutrition literacy, and healthy eating habits can equip kids with the knowledge to help them learn and grow.

One such community-based initiative is the Georgia 4-H VISTA AmeriCorps Summer program. Through this program, AmeriCorp Associates engage youth through 4-H Summer Health Squad lessons and support local communities with food security initiatives. Summer VISTA Associates deliver healthy living and food security lessons and engage community members with hands-on learning around topics like food access, addressing food insecurity, mindfulness and healthy eating, and other topics relevant to their unique area. Through this webinar learn about the goals and management of the AmeriCorps VISTA project, and receive examples of how to implement similar lessons in work with supporting families experiencing food insecurity. Join us to learn more about programs and initiatives bridging the gap between resources and teens and families needing those resources.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this webinar, attendees will be able to:

  • Describe the benefit and importance of addressing food security and health initiatives within communities
  • Identify ways to incorporate healthy living and food security initiatives locally
  • Discuss the AmeriCorps VISTA 4-H Partnership and identify resources offered through this partnership

Among our nation’s active-duty service members and their families, an estimated 24 percent are food insecure. Food insecurity adversely impacts racial/ethnic minority populations, lower-income populations, and rural and remote populations. Additionally, a rise in economic insecurity throughout the COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to increased food insecurity in vulnerable populations. Join OneOp as we focus on expanding food security for the military family and mobilizing family service professionals at federal, state, and local levels to work together on this issue.
