Millennium Cohort Family Study: The Impact of Military Life

This webinar will share the findings of the Millennium Cohort Family Study which provides an understanding of the military experience and its impact on the health and well-being of Service members and their families.  Findings related to relationship quality, physical and psychological health among Service members, their spouses, and children will be explored.

Participants will:

  • Become familiar with the Millennium Cohort Family Study
  • Discuss the impact of military life on spouse mental health, especially for those who may be caregiving for a partner with mental health issues.
  • Learn about aspects of military life that influence marital relationship quality and stability
  • Discover impacts of military life on career outcomes
  • Understand the process of transitioning from service for spouses and children


Dr. Valerie StanderValerie Stander, Ph.D.  has worked as a research psychologist at the Naval Health Research Center (NHRC) for more than 20 years studying the health and wellbeing of military personnel and their families. Within the NHRC Military Population Health Directorate, Dr. Stander is currently the Principal Investigator of the Millennium Cohort Family Study, a 21-year longitudinal program of research documenting the impact of military life stress on family relationships.  

Hope McMaster, Ph.D. has been a research psychologist Dr. Hope McMaster, Ph.D.with the Millennium Cohort Family Study since it was originally proposed and funded in 2010. She is the lead investigator for all foundational papers. As the lead investigator for the Family Study’s Mental Health Domain, Dr. McMaster has created a portfolio of research that includes investigations of spouse baseline mental health, risk and protective factors for spouse depression, the role of service member PTSD symptom clusters on spouse depression, access to military services and community factors on spouse mental health, and the role of separation from the military on spouse mental health.

Event page image, Jacqueline Pflieger, Ph.D. Jacqueline Pflieger, Ph.D. is a Senior Research Psychologist at the Naval Health Research Center (NHRC) in San Diego, CA. Since 2015, she has led the Millennium Cohort Family Study’s program of research on military couple relationship adjustment. Prior to working at NHRC, Dr. Pflieger was the lead analyst for the Department of Defense military spouse surveys as well as the health-related behaviors surveys of military personnel.

  • Certified Family Life Educators (CFLEs): Seeking approval for 1.5 Contact Hours from the National Council on Family Relations to CFLE’s.
  • Certificate of completion will also be available for providers interested in documenting their training activities.
